Combined world production of MarinTrust compliant material
The global share of marine ingredients production certified against the MarinTrust Factory Standard in 2019-2023 is presented in the pie chart below.
These calculations are based on annual declarations of production volumes of MarinTrust compliant material by certified sites; therefore, the global share of certified fishmeal and fish oil varies each year.
The five-year averages presented below demonstrate the progress that the fishmeal and fish oil industry has achieved over time.
There has been a slight downturn in certified production in the last two years, which has predominately been driven by reduced fishing in South America in 2023 due to El Niño, and the loss of MSC certification, and consequently MarinTrust recognition, for blue whiting in Europe which has had a lasting impact. The blue whiting fishery is currently part of an ongoing Fishery Improvement project (FIP), under the MarinTrust Improver Programme. Data collection of marine ingredients globally is greatly improving and this has provided useful information on production in countries where MarinTrust does not yet have a significant presence, such as India and Japan. This data is helping MarinTrust further target key areas of growth to continue to increase certified production.
Global fishmeal and fish oil perspective
As of June 2024, 29 companies are in the process of applying for certification under the MarinTrust Standards. This demonstrates MarinTrust’s continuing credibility and recognition within the value chain.
The MarinTrust Improver Programme, which does not allow companies to claim certification, currently has a total number of 38 accepted sites globally. A volume of 300,000 metric tonnes of Improver Programme accepted fishmeal and fish oil was produced in 2023, an increase of over 100,000 metric tonnes from the previous year.
Certified world production of other marine ingredients
The figures above do not take into account the MarinTrust certified production of other marine ingredients, e.g. hydrolysates.
The total volume of non-fishmeal and fish oil marine ingredients certified under the MarinTrust standard in 2023 was 81,000 metric tonnes, and 41,000 metric tonnes were produced under the Improver Programme.
MarinTrust Chain of Custody certified sites
As of December 2024 there are 112 certified sites in 23 different countries that have been successfully audited to the MarinTrust Chain of Custody Standard. These figures are subject to change.
